Dr. Phil Miller is Senior Program Officer with the Conservation Planning Specialist Group (CPSG), an advisory conservation organization that is part of the Species Survival Commission of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
Academically trained as a population geneticist and conservation biologist, he uses his expertise in simulation modeling techniques to develop population viability and disease risk analyses across a wide range of endangered species and against an equally diverse human cultural background. Since 2011 he has brought this expertise to work with ACC&D to model population management efforts for overabundant free roaming cat colonies.
In addition to these analytical responsibilities, Phil serves as a species conservation planning workshop designer and facilitator, having conducted over 80 conservation planning workshops in 40 countries around the world. He has also served on a CPSG team that teaches both analytical and workshop facilitation techniques to conservation management specialists from around the world.
Phil is a co-author of IUCN Guidelines documents on species conservation planning and wildlife disease risk analysis, and co-authored the 2003 book Experiments in Consilience. Current research interests include incorporating methodologies for human behavior change into quantitative risk assessment techniques and using this integrated approach for more effective conservation planning processes for endangered wildlife.
Phil and his wife Ellen have two grown children and live in Minneapolis, Minnesota with their two cats, Boris and Maximus.
