Dr. Joanne Maki is the Technical Director for the North America, Veterinary Public Health group at Boehringer-Ingelheim Animal Health. She works with non-profit groups, government agencies, and public health professionals to implement veterinary rabies prevention programs.

Her work supports the global effort led by the WHO, OIE and FAO to eliminate human rabies transmitted by dogs. Her primary focus is technological improvements of oral and injectable veterinary vaccines.

At Rhone Merieux, Inc. from 1990-1996 she was the principal scientist involved in field evaluation and USDA licensing of the first US oral rabies vaccine for wildlife as well as the first non-adjuvanted injectable canarypox rabies vaccine for cats.

In 2003 she managed the North America veterinary public health business at Merial Ltd., and was the global veterinary public health technical director from 2005-2017.

Dr. Maki received her Bachelor of Animal Science from West Virginia University, her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Louisiana State University and a Master’s degree in comparative and experimental medicine from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She was a NIH principal investigator at the University of Georgia, Athens from 1996 to 2002 developing a model to study mucosal immunity, which led to her Ph.D. degree.

She lives near Athens, Georgia along with several dogs, cats, and a flock of Gulf Coast Sheep, which provide plenty of wool for spinning and knitting.
